Skimmer setup question

I would like to add a good quality skimmer to my tank. I would really like to have one that can be installed underneath. The problem is that I don't have a under tank filter system or sump. Is there a way I can set up a skimmer that is not a hang on type?

Nope. You either have to go with a hang on or at least use a sump. The top of the skimmer has to be above the water level, whether it's the water level of the aquarium or the sump. You could build yourself one that would go from the floor to above the water level, but that's not really something you want on a display tank. I would recommend that you install a sump, they are not difficult and they have a large number of benefits. If you don't want to use an aquarium as the sump you can even use a cheap rubbermaid tote or something similar.

It seems that it would be easy to make a overflow box, but I dont understand the concept that the siphon tube and return flow from the pump will equal in amount of flow. What gives?
