+1 all of the skimmers mentioned above are very good. Stick to one of those and you'll be good. If your looking for a HOB, aqua c remora would be your best bet.

hang on back suggestions are easy due to lack of choices so I'll stick with those. tons of sump skimmers, you have to be very specific so I'll pass on the recommendations. remora is underpowered for a 72g. coralife skims okay but besides overflowing (which I've all but resolved with simply drilling out the air intake) its just requires too much adjustment too often (which is why I replaced it). still okay for sump use if you dont mind fiddling and definatley not for the new skimmer cost (I paid $107 brand new for the 125. now they are $170. not a chance I'd pay that). there are several bulky options you could hang on (turboflotor, berlin X2 pinwheel ect) but the the only true hang on backs that will do a 72g comfortably are kind of pricey.
C&C marine supply with SICCE pump (same that octo extremes/MSXs use) $400
Bermuda Rogue Wave true venturi skimmer $310 plus you need at least a Mag 3 pump to run it
Deltec MCE600 aquabee pinwheel $550 collection cup kind of sucks $550

these are the only true hang on backs that will do a 75g and beyond in a high performance manner.
As usual the budget alternative Octopus
Oct-DBH-300F dual (225gph) internal needle wheel $220
or you can wait for the single (530gph) external needle wheel Oct-BH-2000 $?

noooo! no remora! coralife super skimmer 125.
R U serious? I hate my super skimmer on my 55 QT, I'm always having to adjust the bubble height and occasionally it will go nuts and start to overflow on its own.

yep. i feel the same way about the remora. microbubbles and a lack of skimmate, along with the suction noise from hell. the remora was louder than my ASM G4X.
the ss 125 isn't too bad. the one i operated for a few months never gave me any trouble.

1. sump footprint and height?
2. budget?
3. any preferences (needlewheels, downdrafts, venturi, low energy consumption ect)?
4. whats the possibility of moving to a bigger tank?

1. I'm pretty sure the sump is a standard 20 gallon tank.
2. I would rather not have a super expensive one but not a cheap one either so basically one that gets the job done.
3. No preference.
4. No i'm upgrading from a 35 to the 72.

I just set up my MSX160 and i would recommend you give it a look.its been up an running for about 10 hrs and its already producing. It didnt cost me and arm and a leg, and it fits in my 20g long sump with plenty of room to spare .I have read nothing but great things about this skimmer ,i understand that the first models had some glitches but i believe they have been all worked out. So far im a very happy owner of this skimmer.

I have an inexpensive skimmer(a 180 gal in my 125 gal tank), and it is working like a Swiss clock. I won't get into the debate over brands, but the brand I have makes skimmers for 3 of the largest American companies. Some people have brand loyalties that may not make sense, but makes them feel good about the product. Point is, I would do some research as to what features of a skimmer would fit your needs for the setup you have, rather than a reliance on a skimmer brand that 5 people say is the best and 20 people say is junk.

One last thought, $500 for a skimmer is insane! That only makes sense if bragging on forums about how much you spent is imortant to you.

you have high end and low end products with everything you buy. $500 isn't even on the high end side of protein skimmers. A good "normal class" skimmer for a medium aquarium (75-125g) generally cost $250-350. If you have a larger aquarium you have no other choice if you want a adequate skimmer but to spend more money. I get they are just some acrylic and pumps and grossly overpriced for some plastic and pump(s) BUT there is an actual difference between a $1300 ATI bubble master/Deltec/Reeflo and a $400 "large" say ASM or Reef devil. its measurable in air pull, air/water ratio, size of bubbles and watts drawn. unless you are the one responsible for doing water changes, maintanence, cleaning up algae and correcting problems of a 300g you arent in a position to understand why its worth it to spend that kind of money. On smaller aquariums you can get away with and actually have little need for an expensive skimmer. As for the $500 hang on back the AquaC pro cost $230 and gives about 3/10th the performance of a $500 MCE500 so who's really getting ripped. its just a case where if you want a good flat bodied hang on back you simply have no other choices then the ones I gave ($350-500). you have to also remember Deltecs, H&S and some other high end brands are imports from Europe, accustomed to its euro and asian customers spending that kind of bread for skimmers and the exchange ratio doesn't help either.
back on topic. I think all the MSX skimmers are too much skimmer for a 72 (smallest one 6.5" body and rated at 125 heavy/160med/250 light). A regular $170 Octopus NW150 or AquaEuro 135 will easily handle a 72g as any good needle wheel skimmer with 6" reaction chamber can. Euroreef RS80 ($225) is also a good option. body's a little smaller, pump is better, quality acrylic construction. ASM G1X would do the job but its $25 more than the Euroreef with the same size/brand pump and inferior (PVC) materials to all of the above. basically any "good" needle wheel with adequate size body (5-6") will do the job (where its octopus, ASM, AquaEuro,Deltec,H&S, Euroreef, Aquamedic ect).

I have a 250 gal FOWLR and $500 for a good skimmer is actually a pretty darn good price. Being cheap with your filtration is only gonna cause problems in the future cause in most cases, you get what you pay for.
