You can run a skimmer from the very beginning of tank set up. You'd be surprised that even the brand new water can produce "skimmate".
What is your set up?

125g , 65lbs live rock from an established tank, 40lbs crushed coral 60 lbs sand;20 lbs "live sand(from a bag)"; 5 gallon bucket of sand from an established tank; about 30lbs of skeleton coral(is that considered in the live rock weight because it is very pourous?)2 36" 10000k t-12;2 36" actinic t-12. waiting on 2 Mh but he wants to sell me 400 watt and I only want 175 watt.

ammonia was up a little.25ppm the other day; yadda yadda yadda. I dont think this thing is going to go through the whole cylce. i think its precycled from the established crap I put in there. Been ste up 2 wks nothing changing much in the parameters
