If you could just put one on your tank for a few days and see the gunk it sucks out, you would immediatley go buy one. They also clear up the water.

I personally think the Kent Marine Nautilus is one of the best for the money. I am using an ASM G 3 on my 75gl that is ding a great job, but doesn't touch the Nautilus as far as dry, dark skimmate.
I'd say necessary item to have. As mentioned before put a decent skimmer on your tank for a day or two and see all the gunk you collect you'll feel like a neglectful parent that is letting their kids (fish and corals) live in they're own filth. a skimmer is the only way to remove all the dissolved organics so the fish aren't swimming around in their own pee and poop.
post some pictures of the 500 that would be nice
Also if you don't use a skimmer sooner or later unless you are changing water every other day. You will wake up with a nitrate factory and no living critters
the POOO has to go some where are you running a giant sump with tons of live rock how are you acomplishing this feet
