slimy green acro

okay, so today i went to my LFS a few towns over. It was only my second time in this one but it is awsome. I went for a red brain, picked on up for 70 bucks, a good sized one too. But i saw this gorgious green slimy acro. They also had another type (forget the name) and a red monti. These were the least expensive SPS that i could find. The slimy was 40, same for the montie cap, and the other green acro was only 35. The guy said that the monti cap and the slimey acro were pretty hardy as far as SPS go. I decided to come here and see what all your opinions are. Besides, tomorrow they are hosting the local reef keeping club and said they are having a bunch of sales and things! so i decided to wait. But he said they have falled over and everything and they are fine. All are captive bred. The guy said as long as they have stable water quality things will be fine. I knowthat SPS needs realy good conditions, but i was just wondering how everyone here things of it. My tank is 7 months old, 40 breeder with 175 HQI and 2X65 watt PC. Please ask if there is anything else you need to know.

Monti Caps and Green Slimers are about the easiest SPS to keep. They will do best if pleased some where more directly under your MH. I would recommond keep most of your SPS near the middle since you only have one bulb.

yes i was planning on doing that. That you very much for your reply. I dont realy expect to go all SPS. I love LPS and mushrooms too much so i think the fixture i have now will be fine. Maybe a clam after another half a year or so. But yeah, the guy said they were easy as long as my water quality is good. ANd i new monties were pretty hardy. But i just wanted to make sure he wasnt jsut going for a sale. Seeing how it was my second time in that store, i dont know who is reliable or who isnt.
:joy: thanks again

IMO slimmers are hardy acro's but I wouldn't consider them a hardy sps coral. IMO all acropora corals are delicate... monti caps are a good starter sps coral... as are other montiporas.

thank you reefnut! I checked on another site and the difficulty was only moderate. The place where a i looked, as well as the one i was looking at today were both tank-bred. And i do believe that that would make them hardier? or am i making that up? lol

so pretty much everyone all around agrees that as long as i have stable water conditions and the proper lighing then it should be fine? The slimer is delicate but as far as acros go and the montis are more hardier? The guy said that they will eat oyster eggs. That it would be benificial but they dont need it..... are oyster eggs the proper size?
thank you everyone, i think i am going to go and check out what types of sales they are having today
but does anyone else have anything that they would like to add? Even their experience with either would be great.
thanks so much!

would i need a wave maker? something in my mind is telling me that i read that somewhere, but since i never planned on keeping an SPS, i probably let it go out the other ear.

the slimer is looking great. all the ployps are out, except for the ones that are shaded. seeing how the acro is right under the light, and branches out, there is a side that is shaded due to an arm shading it....... is this something to worry about? shoudl i somehow rearrange it to make sure that all of it is in full light?

I think they are moderate for sps..The bali slimmer was one of my first sps. After about a year it was the size of a basket ball.

you can kind of see it in my Avitar. I'd sometimes have to break off frags the size of your hand to make room

If your going to "step up" to sps your probably going to need more then just a wave maker. I think alternating currentwave makers are on the "top ten" list when it comes to reef tanks. Ca reactors, Auto Top off and GOOD skimming are on that list too.

Never ever seen a 175 watt HQI....Is it a 175 watt SE or 150 watt DE?

It was the 1st SPS I had. Kept it under 440VHO. It grew like a weed. I now have it under 2) 175MH and 220VHO. Its color is better but it grew great under my VHO only set up. High in the tank.

nope. it is a 175 watt HQI.... here it is directly from the site.....
"three separate on/off switches on a 175W external remote ballast controlling HQI, compact fluorescent, bluemoon LED separately"
There are many pieces of equiptment that i do plan on getting, although i dont want to go all out on SPS. just a few probably. I would love to get an auto top off soon though..... but next on the list is a generator for when winter hits and the power goes out.
