I don't you could have one for life. Not for long either. They need lots of room to hover.

Blue Spots I think are smaller. But they have been reported as "difficult" to keep.

I've never kept rays. But I think sand would be nice for them. Hopefully someone will chime in. Maybe pose the question in a new post.

Oh good lord, do NOT keep ANY ray in a 55 gallon tank.
Just don't. It's too small, doesn't have nearly enough bottom space.
Your LFS guy is smoking something if he thinks an electric ray can be kept for life (or for any reasonable length of time) in a 55 g. Those are even more notorious casualties than bluespots.
I kept my bluespot in a 180g with perfect water, and excellent care, and it STILL died almost a year later.
These animals take special attention and care, and are not easy to keep.

Yeah, blue spots are really for people with super clean big tanks that are prepared to loose about $80.
Yellow rays on the other hand get about as big and are very hardy. I'd recommend one if you ahd a bigger tank.

That still wouldn't have enough surface area. You have to remember that rays are wide as well as long. So the depth of thetank is very important.
