Is there much of a "smell" from a saltwater tank? The wife is worried about me getting a tank? Do you get a "foul smell" from an aquarium????

No it don't smell at all. The only time you will have a foul smell is when you first start the tank with uncured live rock or when something dies or when you don't do any water changes!!! I've seen that before and they STINK! :happyfish

It should only smell like fresh sea water, however there are many things that might smell.
If you leave the top of the dry flake food, that ususally stinks.
If you leave a bucket around with filters that you took out with some water that will begin to reek.
If a fish goes carpet swimming and you don't find it right away.
Several things can happen, just use your nose and chase em down.

On a healthy tank, the only thing that will smell is the skimmate, but if you keep your collection cup cleaned regularly, it won't be a problem.

Thats the beauty of a well functioning skimmer. I am sure a lot of us had not so well maintained fresh water aquariums when we where kids. Take the cap off the skimmer cup and take a whiff, it will bring back memories. :joy:
Other than that and thats only when you take the collection cups cap off, there should be no offending smells from a SW tank whatsoever.
