Hi,

I need BLACK nassarius snails, but I don't remember the Latin name, to determine if what is being sold is a black (cold water) nassarius or a regular tropical reef one....I tried a google search to no avail. BTLDreef knew, but she hasn't been around in what seems like ages....ANY HELP????

This is for a Seahorse tank right?

Yes, it stays at 65 degrees in the 90g. I got a notice last night that the bad weather will hold off my shipment....better late then dead. It doesn't look like there will be any break in the weather until Thursday next week.

I wasn't able to do proper water changes....I think what happened was my alkalinity went way too low, and trace elements such as iron as well...and I lost my CUC, except the shrimp are okay (I would think the shrimp would die off as well). I lost allot of the macros (which allowed the PO4 to go crazy) so I had brown cyanobacteria, dinoflagellates, and brown algae. Thanks to Silverado who helped me do 2 water changes in the last week, the tank is doing much better. I put 20 margarita snails in there too.

I have the water made up and plan to do 1 to 2 gallon water changes a day, to get things back up to snuff. The margarita snails are working hard on the brown algae and the dinoflagellates are gone. The cyano is slowly going away as well. The macros are getting their red color back and growing again.

Now that I see a few gallons a day isn't so hard...I think that will be my method from now on. Once a month requires a large water change that I can't do myself, but I can manage the few gallons...shame on me for not realizing it sooner.

My snails FINALLY arrived this morning, it's been nearly 2 weeks since I ordered them...the weather got way up there to 11 degrees last night (heat wave compared to the -25 we had) anyway I hope they eat the wasted food the seahorses are dumping in, so I can get the tank back on track...the macros are turning red again, and I even got some actual skimmate.... I was just getting a ton of foam, I'm talking about what looked like washing machine suds, overflowing everywhere in the sump (no doubt from decaying macros). I've been doing daily 2g to 3g water changes. I still have brown cyano all over the sand, I have cleaned it up 3Xs now, it takes it a week, but it comes right back...I hope the new nassarius snails helps to reduce that too.

I 'm confident that the Snails will clean up leftover food from Seahorse feeding.

Just keep in mind that the Snails will not actually remove the nutrients from the system. Just convert the nutrients to something easier to dispose of.

I understand, I have the macroalgae and a skimmer running, along with a de-nitration filter...the macros are/were in trouble (regaining color and starting to grow again), and until they are all up to snuff the other gizmos should help to keep the tank going. Like I said, I will keep doing small daily water changes. The seahorses are healthy and happy as can be, the only one complaining about the brown colors is me...this big 90g is right in my living room, and it's the first thing anyone sees when they enter the house....OY.
