I would not count on the chocolate chip star to prefer algae over your snails. It is pretty opportunistic, and given the choice between algae or meat, I reckon it would go for the meat. IMO, NO starfish is suitable for algae control.
If you are having these issues with your snails:
What is your specific gravity?
How long do you acclimate them?
Have you ever run a copper test?

I believe he mentioned about not flipping them over. Certain ones can't flip themselves over and they'll die over time. I think I read in one of the thread saying turbos can flip themselves over. I have to flip mine over off and on. I didn't flip anyone over for a week, I was suprised. I was hoping they keep up the good work until the following week when 2 flipped over upside down...lol...I just flipped 2 last night, tonight they're fine....It may take them up to 3 days before they would even move when first introduced. It took a couple of them one day, then the rest about a week, I thought they were dead, but they all moved and the following week, they were on top of the glass. :happyfish

Some definitely seem to have problems, but he turned them over and they are still not moving. This behavior is also consistent with "poisoning" from things like copper. If it is happening to several individuals, I would rule out acclimation, water parameter problems (specifically too low a salinity) and heavy metals (copper in particular).
