snails and hermits

If you have fish then it's important. Something needs to convert the fish waste to small particles and something needs to convert the small particles to fine particles a skimmer can remove.

I think it's equally important if you feed your corals, even without fish.
On a side note - I don't like mixing hermits and snails. Hermits like to kill snails. I rid my tanks of hermits years ago, and just went with all snails, much happier

Non aggresives. Puffers, triggers, and any other fish with a beak like to eat those inverts. The list is endless. Look up what you like and then ask about those specifically.
I have two Snow flake clowns, a coral beauty, and a potters wrasse for now. Lots of color, action, and personality. It's really personal taste that defines what you can put In the tank after size requirements and cohabitation.
The only issue with clowns is they can be aggressive towards other fish.

How many fish and what types do you have?
My personal rule is 1 snail for every 2 gallons. With the right combo of snails, this has worked for me.
For example:
I have a 180 with 2 tangs, a clown, 2 pj cardinals, 1 yellow cirrus wrasse, 1 melanarus wrasse, 2 red striped gobies, 1 sand sifting goby, 1 black com tooth blennie, 3 fairy wrasses, 1 coral beauty
I have for a cleaning crew: 1 fire shrimp, 1 skunk cleaner, 40 trochus snails, 15 Astraeas, 25 nerites, 15-25 nassarius
I have a few random limpets, albalones, a miscellaneous snails, but the majority are listed above.
I did have cerith snails and a few bumble bee snails, but anything small my yellow cirrus wrasse kills :-/
I hate my nerites, they lay eggs all over the place, but they're good glass cleaners. If I had it to do all over again, I'd probably pack my tank with nassarius and trochus and maybe a few Astreas.
I hate Turbo snails - they knock too many corals over

We only keep scarlet reef hermits (Pagueristes cadenati) for this reason...they really do tend to leave your snails and fishes alone, and our fishes leave them alone.

Every time we have ever attempted to keep scarletts, they die :-(

Really?  Wow...never had that trouble before.
Yeah, never survive for me. In multiple tanks, too :-/
