Ok I have a 24g nano dx. Had it about 2 months now. I have about 20lbs live rock and a cc bed. i have a randalls shrimp goby and a citrin clown goby that have done fine. no issues there. i have 5 little hermits. i have some zoos as well only a few. <y light is on a timer for about 11 hours a day.All test are what they should be. p 8.2 to 8.3 .sp g around 1.023 trates trites and amon 0. But whenever I add a az snail from the lfs it dies. added one yesterday and nothing. Anysuggestions on what is wrong everything else in tank is great. I have lost over 8 snails now and I have to dig em out. My little crabs have upgraded there shells on a few of them so that s good. Any help would be great.

u need to acclimate the snails for a long time...are you doing that?? just in my experience i aclimate all snails when i add them for 2+ hours minimum

Are the snails relatively the same size as the hermits? It's possible the hermits are killing them for their shells. Try getting some snails that are way larger, or way smaller than the hermits and see what happens then.

I only temperature acclimate my snails, and I've never had one die as a result. I've lost quite a few to the hermits, though. I guess you could try acclimating them longer and see what happens, too. It may or may not be the cause.

the snail are about 2x the size of the hermits. I have been acclimating them honelsty for about 30 to 45 min. I will try to extend that time. TY

i have tried to just temp acclimate snails and hermits..they all died when i did it..:( I suppose it was such a big difference in the water they were shipped in and my water was the cause...That's why i acclimate for 2 hours now..These lil sickers are expensive to just kill em cause u r in a hurry..just my opinion..Looks like some just temp. acclimate but ive never heard of that being of any good for inverts...Good luck on your next snails!!

I just temp acclimate the snails, but I drip acclimate the hermits and ornamental shrimp and such.
Would you say the snails have sufficient food in the tank? Algae to munch off of the rocks and glass? It's possible they could be starving to death. None of the hermits have died?
I'm sorry this is so perplexing for you. :( It's frustrating to not understand why things are going on in your tank like that.

I have a couple thoughts on what it might be.
1 - Salinity. Salinity should be 35 - 37ppt. If you're measuring with a swing-arm hydrometer you need to test it against a meter or other device known to be accurate. Swing arm accuracy is alway suspect. I don't know what your salinity is because you only listed the Specific Gravity but it's probably too low.
If your Salinity is fine try acclimating a Snail by sticking it to a clean spot on the glass above the water line. The Snail can acclimate itself as it climbs into the water.
2 - Are you using Tap water?. Depending on where you live your tap water may contain Copper, Zinc, or other metals that adsorb onto the rocks and glass. When snails eat they scrape the rocks and glass so if there's any copper on the surfaces the Snails will pick it up and it's very toxic to them.

I use RO water only. I do use the swing arm. it test about the same as what I was getting from the local fish store. I bought premixed saltwater for the last water change. But i will pick up another snail tomorrow. Everyting else in the tank is great. The last snail I got never did come out and move. So it was like it was almost dead to begin with. Just a little wierd. I have 5 hermits and all are fine. Thanks for the help. I give em another try.
