Is it normal for snail's to die off after a couple of weeks?

no. either something was wrong with the water or the snails wasnt acclimated properly.

When I bought them I asked the guy he just said to place them in and just make sure they are right side up.

if the temp and the specific gravity is different by a wide margin, u need to acclimate not only inverts, but fish too.
