Snake's Garden 2012

So, since the forums are so dead slow, I am going to post pics of my garden this year. lol
Yes, I do garden. It's my other passion.
Last year I ploughed up a 70x36 foot plot on an empty house lot and tried to grow a few veggies on it. The soil is unammended and had absolutely no compost. Mostly clay and sand, very little lome. So, last year I made a huge compost pile - about 1 ton worth of compost and put it on the field for this year. I almost have 1 more ton of compost going for next year. This year I am going to pile up leaves, chicken and pigeon manure and weed free grass clippings onto the compost pile to decompose for next year. Hopefully I will have 3 or 4 tons of compost for next year.
Anyways, enough about compost. This years field has been planted with okra, tomatoes, swiss chard, cucumbers, squash, egg plant, corn, string beans, two different varieties of water melon, and cantelope (sp??). The plants this year are doing MUCH better than last year. Keep in mind that I am doing this without any irrigation - mainly concentrating on seasonal rains. I do not have access to water at that location - which I am working on getting a permit to put a water meter on the fire hydrant next to the field, but that probably won't be until next year.
I have one blackberry bush that I bought at wal-mart - I wanted to buy ten but I didn't have the funds. I guess I will aim to plant two to four blackberry, blueberry, and raspberry bushes a year down the side of the field. There is also a fence on the back of the field that is begging me to grow Kiwi on. LOL
I think I will end up buying in some cotton gin trash (plant compost from the cotton gin) to help amend the soil some more. Right now it's extremely compacted. I'm going to make a few slits in the back for water drainage and cut a few small holes in the tops of the bags and lay them in between the corn rows and plant squash and beans once the corn grows about a foot high.
Once the soil has an adequate amount of compost and gin trash, I'm sure it will take off. It's just going to take a few years.
pics coming soon!

Watermelon and cantelope patch... It's actually growing pretty well, despite not getting much rain at all... This is the part of the garden that got the majority of that 1ton of compost from last year.

The pictures don't really show all of the seedlings coming up that have been planted. I need a really good rain or two to get them well established soon, otherwise I may have to re-plant.

I have another garden going that is just outside my apartment. It's got much, much better soil and has actually been fertilized well. I am also able to drag a water hose over to it once or twice a week to give it a good soaking in the mornings before I go to work.

Already have some tomatoes budding this year. This pic was taken last week. They have most likely grown much bigger since then.
I try to start all of my plants from seed every year.

lol, last year I planted one watermelon and I got about two dozen small melons out of it. This year, I planted 24 plants in 12 spots at the field. If I can get some decent rain and can buy in some more compost, I'm sure I can probably get about a dozen large melons per plant this year. Too many for just one family to eat.

Point is, I'm going to sell the overstock and give some away to the guy/guys family that is letting me use his land. Gotta pay the piper so to speak.
I really enjoy gardening. That field is just going to take a heck of a lot of work to get the soil just right.

The field is coming along nicely. The watermelon and cantelope have been growing like crazy. We have some corn growing, as well as swiss chard and bell peppers. On the far right, we are trying to grow okra with relatively no success. On the far left, we are trying cucumbers and eggplant - and they are yet to come up. I may have to replant. The tomatoes are starting to produce! woohoo!
