So, since the forums are so dead slow, I am going to post pics of my garden this year. lol
Yes, I do garden. It's my other passion.
Last year I ploughed up a 70x36 foot plot on an empty house lot and tried to grow a few veggies on it. The soil is unammended and had absolutely no compost. Mostly clay and sand, very little lome. So, last year I made a huge compost pile - about 1 ton worth of compost and put it on the field for this year. I almost have 1 more ton of compost going for next year. This year I am going to pile up leaves, chicken and pigeon manure and weed free grass clippings onto the compost pile to decompose for next year. Hopefully I will have 3 or 4 tons of compost for next year.
Anyways, enough about compost. This years field has been planted with okra, tomatoes, swiss chard, cucumbers, squash, egg plant, corn, string beans, two different varieties of water melon, and cantelope (sp??). The plants this year are doing MUCH better than last year. Keep in mind that I am doing this without any irrigation - mainly concentrating on seasonal rains. I do not have access to water at that location - which I am working on getting a permit to put a water meter on the fire hydrant next to the field, but that probably won't be until next year.
I have one blackberry bush that I bought at wal-mart - I wanted to buy ten but I didn't have the funds. I guess I will aim to plant two to four blackberry, blueberry, and raspberry bushes a year down the side of the field. There is also a fence on the back of the field that is begging me to grow Kiwi on. LOL
I think I will end up buying in some cotton gin trash (plant compost from the cotton gin) to help amend the soil some more. Right now it's extremely compacted. I'm going to make a few slits in the back for water drainage and cut a few small holes in the tops of the bags and lay them in between the corn rows and plant squash and beans once the corn grows about a foot high.
Once the soil has an adequate amount of compost and gin trash, I'm sure it will take off. It's just going to take a few years.
pics coming soon!
