I bought a ball python today. My wife doesn't like it, but she's fine now. She's not too upset. I played with him for a little while this evening and made his cage. I've read a lot about balls before I bought him, and I KNOW that I can take care of him. He's so cute! About a foot and a half long. Still eats pinkies.
So - name suggestions? I've come up with Rufus, Leroy, Bob, Jimmy, and confucious :D

I would never leave my ball around an infant, but there is no way a ball is going to harm anyone.

a 20 gallon long would be fine for a single ball python since they are not a very active snake. i never really got into balls when i was breeding reptilesliked the way there body fell into a short tail real quickly) very friendly snake that can handle rougher handleing from young children than a corn snake, and doesnt react to fleeing or biting. good choice as long as your okay with feeding mice to small rats. just remember to try to get it to eating prekilled mice and rats, surprisingly they can do some majordamage to snakes.

lol, when I was a kid, I used to breed albino mice and spun their tails around and knocked em' in the head to kill em' to feed them to my pet boa. I think I can handle feeding popsickle mice :D

you can probe there cloaca and tell based on depth. i would try learning on your own snake cause u can do damage if you dont know wat your doing. i dont like poping(squizzing the cloaca) it can be even more damaging. if you have a local pet shop that can probe(just look at their reaction when you ask them if you can trust them) otherwise live with not knowing. the judging based on length of tail from the cloaca to tip isnt very accurate. on a side note i cant spell to save my life.

grats on the snake. just remember to take it out everyday for 20 mins (when it yawns it is getting tired, put it away) for the first year so she gets used to you, your smell, your hands and being handled in general. this is important, and the difference it makes in the snake as an adult is huge.

I keep my ball in a 75, he's always active at night... hides during the day, but definitely makes use of his cage when the lights go off. He's right at a legitimate 5feet, I have had him for over 13 years..

We have three ball pythons and a corn - I love my BP! (2 of the BP's are Drews, I like them as well but I have had Jonas now over 9 years) He's SUCH a good snake, doesn't mind being handled and is quite content to just sit with you. I think our corn snake is beautiful, she's a reverse okeetee, and totally handleable but I don't find that the corns are willing to just chill, they are more active when out.
Oldest BP on record was 48 years...yeah, I'm gunna be that crazy old lady with the snake

this is what i thought, in aus we wouldnt think about putting a python in a glass tank, they just dont keep the heat in. but maby our snakes have different needs!

LOL you got that right about crappy glass tanks... takes so little to heat a molded plastic tank like a vision cage or similar. I have a 26w CFL daylight on my 75 for the ball, and two 100w infrared heatlamps on the top. One turns off at night. To get the same thing out of a vision, my friend only needs like a single 75w LOL... WTH??
btw.. its oz.. haha that fantasy land from the book haha.

To be honest... don't handle a ball too much, it might stress and stop feeding.. they're already prone to going off feed as is lol...
