Hello:
I read in a marine problem solver book that you can snip (with scissors) aptasia. I did this and the animal retreated into it's whole. Can I continue to do this with out adverse problems? I didn't know if it could poison the water or anything.
Thanks.
It won't poison the water. It won't kill the Aiptasia either. In fact, it may spread them around. That's one of the worst ideas I've heard of coming from a book.
dont do it, i did that b4 reading on here and everyone that i snipped came back with extras. they come back by doubles when you cut them with scissors.
Yeah, cutting them just makes it worse. The most effective remedies that people have used here are Peppermint Shrimp, which usually do a good job, or injecting the anemonies with either boiling water or kalkwasser paste. Do a search on this board and there should be a bunch of posts.
I just heard from another reefer in my area that you can just cover the aptaisa with a small shell. then it will attach to the shell and you remove the shell. its really simple. im trying it in my tank right now, I'll let you know if it works.
I had the biggest problem with that junk. Then my LFS gave some "Stop Aptapsia" It is in a bottle and is a green gunky stuff. You inject the big ones and cover the small ones... works like a charm.
Wamp- they work great on the small ones, but the big ones will still be there. i thought my pepp. killed them all but I had a dotty that killed my pepp. and within days the big ones were back. I know have 4 that are huge! They haven't seperated but as soon as the peppermint was gone they came out. I tried the boiling water and that only worked for a day. They are tough little bastar*s! I wish everything else in my tank was that tough> LOL!
peppermint shrimp do work often, but also, tehy sometimes like to eat feather dusters as well.
IME the best thing was to inject them. And, removing 2 peppermints from a FOWLR with 120+lbs of LR , is a MAJOR pain. Jme
