Snowflake Eel questions

Hey everyone, I was wondering if some of you eel experts can help educate me on the subject. I know very little about eels but I would like to have one in the future, hopefully a Snowflake Eel.
Will it eat hermit crabs and snails?
Will it eat a large cleaner shrimp?
How small does a fish have to be for it to be in danger? Would a lawnmower blenny or a 2" maroon clown become food?
Is there anything I need to do to eel proof my tank? Right now I have eggcrate covers.
Thanks!

I am by no means an eel expert, but I have had my snowflake for a year now, so I can help a little bit...
Will it eat hermits and snails? Nope, at least I have never heard of one eating those. I know mine has never even looked at one, so I doubt that any do.
Will it eat a cleaner shrimp? This is usually hit or miss, although most eels do know the difference between a cleaner shrimp, and a meal. Cleaners all have white antenae and I believe this is something that the eels clue on too, as mine has been living with two cleaner shrimp (neither being large) for about nine months now and the eel even lets the shrimp craw into its mouth to clean his teeth after a meal.
Fish a meal? I think the big thing is, try to find an eel at the LFS that is already eating frozen foods. If you can do this your fish should never be in danger. My eel opens his mouth when the fish come by, but never moves at them, so I assume this is a "warning" sign to the fish to get away. My eel does not bother any of my fish and never has so I guess this one is hit or miss as well, although on eating frozen has a much higher success rate.
Eel proofing your tank? Just make sure that there are no escapes for the eel to get into. You already have the egg crate, so thats a big plus. Make sure if you have overflows, that you make sure the eel cannot be sucked through as they are known to end up in sumps. All I would do is add a piece of egg crating around the overflow to keep everything a half an inch away from the edge or so. This is about it.
Good luck, and I love the SFE I have, its a great addition to my tank and is a model citizen. I think snowflakes are a great addition to most tanks, as long is there is nothing that is a known eel eater in the group (groupers are known for this). Have a good one!

Thanks for the help! I can put the eel in a temporary tank until I get it to eat frozen food. A tank with no small fish, shrimp and other ditractions. Problem is this temporary tank doesn't have a whole lot of LR and caves for it to hide in. Would it be ok like this for a few weeks?

The second night i got my white cheek moray it got into the sump, i thought it went in the return but it would have got killed in the pump.
when i was looking, between my glass lid and the black overflow there is like an inch of space so im guessing he wiggled through there, what can i do to fill in that gap?

I have an overflow so will have to cover it somehow, probably with a piece of eggcrate.

I have a Snowflake in a very aggressive tank. I will sometimes feed live goldfish or rosies. He has no problem eating on that is at least an inch long. He also clears out any snails I add into the tank. He very rarely eats frozen so he's probably hungry alot. That might be why he eats the snails.

Hmm fatty, that is strange... I have never heard of a SFE going after snails, I thought they were more crustacean eaters, as far as a Clean up crew is concerned. I have about 10 turbos, and probably 45 nassuris (sp?) and cerith snails combined without ever having an incident. I also have probably 20 blue leg hermits, and 4 strawberry hermits, and all are still accounted for.
Also, I have heard that feeding goldfish is not really a good thing for saltwater species, although I could be mistaken, could anyone add onto this that is more experienced than I?

i have a SFE in my 55g and never bothers any of my snails, crabs, fish, etc.
when i feed the tank it will come out from the smell, and i feed it krill everytime. my coral beauty also sleeps in the same cave as the SFE and the eel never bothers it. it the eel is kept well fedd you should have no problems!

Just got my snowflake eel today, it's currently drip acclimating. How thick do adult snowflakes get? Because mine is REALLY thin. It's about 5-6" long but it's thinner than a pencil.

Go to you LFS and get one of the plastic caves they sell for snakes you can get a small size and they are very inexpensive you eel will love or just use a piece of PVC pipe

I temporarily put the snowflake in my lionfish tank, until I get it used to eating frozen food and can move it in the bigger tank. There's live rock in there and it found a good cave because I don't see it anymore. Good thing is this tank is only 45gal, with no coral so I can easily feed it. lol, the little fuzzy dwarf was really curious when she saw the eel. Kept looking and following it around, then it lost interest and left it alone.
Only thing I'm worried about is if it escapes. The top is completely covered with eggcrate but it's thin enough to easily fit thrugh the holes. Not sure what I can do though? I don't have a glass cover for this tank.

My friend I hate to say this but my moneys on the snowflake to make a getaway. IMO you need to get a versa cover for your tank as soon as you can. I would also weigh down my egg crate for now. You can not believe how strong eels are
Good luck

I will look for a cover tomorrow. It's a standard 45gal so it shouldn't be hard to find. Maybe I can place something on top of the eggcrate until then. Thanks for the advice.

My friend this is what I would do. Now remember what I would do. I would take some plastic wrap like Saran wrap and rap my egg crate TURN OFF THE LIGHTS. And go that way until tomorrow when I got a cover my sump should give me enough air exchange for one night AGAIN THIS IS WHAT I WOULD DO
AND NO LIGHTS ON WITH THE PLASTIC WRAP ON

Well, I had some time so I went out and picked up a versa cover. Now the tank is eel escape proof.

Problem I'm having with the glass cover is that I woke up this morning and the water temp was 80deg. Usually it's a constant 78. 80 is not that high but I'm sure it'll get higher when the lights come on.

Man, this eel is so cool! It found a large LR that must have a lot of tunnels inside because it goes in through one end, then comes out the other end, goes back in, pops its head out the top, then the bottom. It's fun to watch it. I also fed it some mysis this morning and it ate at least 4 pieces that I could see. Even my wife likes it who used to say that eels creep her out and she doesn't want one.
