had one. I really liked him. They hide a lot. Back in the old days when wet dry systems were not what they are today, he hid under my underground filter. I don't know about the waste, he hide so much I never noticed.
You can hand feed them though. That was fun.

I have 2 in my 65 gallon .. they're great .. I feed them raw shrimp on a feeder stick .. they love it .. I've never had a problem with .. and I have 3 hermit crabs in the tank and they never bother them .. but the only thing is they're very competitive for food .. they will bite each other to get the other one's food .. but no serious damage has ever become them

the SFE's tend to be harder to get to feed at first.. i think it's really luck some will eat and some just wont!

SFE's are hard to feed at the beginning. Soak their food in garlic and they will take to it.
They create a big bioload on the tank so you might want to factor that in before you get one. My baby was almost 21 inches.
They do not eat daily, so feed them every couple of days. They are known to go on hunger strikes for up to a month so if he does, don't worry to much about it. He will eat eventually.
Snowflakes are nocturnal so feed them at night. They basically will hang out with the head above the substrate or rock, but the rest of the body will be hidden. This is normal behavior.
Do not put a SFE in a tank with fish that are smaller than their mouth or they will become a meal. Shrimp are another one that can be potential food sources for them.
They have a lot of personality and you really need to have your top covered well as they will slide out of the tank and go to the floor.
Case and point. One morning I woke up and was walking into my bedroom bathroom and saw something that I could have sworn was an 'accident' of my dog's. The problem was my dog was standing by it and staring at it. This is not normal for my dog. The rare occasions that she has had an accident she hides.
I looked again and saw my SFE curled up on the floor. Needless to say I grabbed him and followed the 'throw them in unless they are crispy' rule and he was fine after I got him back in the tank.
Hope this information helps you.

very good advice Merredeth .. I agree 100% .. they love shrimp .. I buy mine raw shrimp from publix and cut it up .. put it on a feeding stick and rub it in their noses .. and then I occasionally give them freeze-dried krill, or frozen krill .. whatever I or my eels feel like .. sometimes they won't eat the shrimp so I feed them krill and yes .. don't feed them every other day ... I feed mine then wait 2 days then feed them again

Krill and shrimp is what the eel gets here as well. He's been fine with it all a long. I don't like freeze dried anything though because I feel like nutrients get removed in the drying process.

SFE's are not fish eaters by nature. If kept well fed, they probably won't bother smaller fish. If the shrimp are cleaner species, the eel will recognize this and likely leave them alone. I kept my large SFE with two cleaner shrimp who would routinely clean the inside of the eels mouth. An emerald crab would be a meal at some point. These eels are crustacean eaters, and all but hard shelled crabs are at risk.
As mentioned, feed a few times a week. Mix up the diet. I never liked krill as a staple. Chopped shrimp, squid, scallop, crab, etc... are all good offerings. Silversides are usually taken eagerly, and occassional krill. Use a feeding stick and condition the eel to fed predictably.

great advice everyone .. animlasi these are all reputable sources .. and yes I only feed mine freeze dried krill occasionally if they don't seem interested in anything else .. I usually switch off between raw shrimp and frozen krill
