hello, i can see you are very interested in getting one!
. First off, have a tight lid! They will escape if the lids not tight!!!!!! Snowflakes mainly eat shrimp, crabs, and snails. So if you have them in your tank the eel may or may not eat them. You should feed him krill, squid, silversides, ect. The minumum tank size would probably be around the 30gal range. But a 50gal+ can house them for life. They are also very active and curious, at least mine was. I hope that helps you!

Hi sorry for butting in on your thread but does anyone have an opinion on me adding a snowflake to my 20 gal fowlr ... i just saw one at my lfs and it seemed really small j/w eventually in about 2-3 months i would transfer into my 55
the other inhabitants of the 20 would be some sort of dwarf angel 1 perc some kind of goby and a cc star
thanks

IMO you already have too many fish in that 20 as it is. If you already have the 55 just put him in there now.
they grow very fast. I got on in feb when he was probably around7 inches. he is now over a foot long!
they get two feet long so a tank of 55 would be good for live. I have a 40 gallon that will hold mine, but im makeing a sump too. That way he will have pleanty of water volume to break down the waste of the fish. They will pick a few good hiding spots throughout the tank and sit there with their head sticking out. They eat crusteceans in the wild and usualy not fish like other morays. But some will not pass up a small damsel or clownfish if it will fit in its mouth. so watch out!
great little fish i think

just one question.......would a snowflake do good in a 20 gallon as the only fish with lots of hiding places.

not unless he is very small and will soon be upgraded. When they get large, they become high waste producers.

I'm new to this site, and haven't posted much, but my first fish was a snowflake moray. He jumped out of my tank once, and I learned the truth to the saying slippery as an eel. I'm probably going to to take flak for this, but I fed mine live fish from the bait store, he would come up and eat right out of my hand. He didn't like any other foods (except sometimes some fresh sliced fish pieces or shrimp if I got some at the store, and before I cooked it). He grew to about 24 inches and lived for 17 years until he died last year.

What do you guys think for a 125 gallon,,,,banana or a snowflake eel?
There will mostly be fish but a few inverts ( crab, starfish).

it depends on the eel
a snowflake will be a better companion if you plan to have smaller fish. Their main diet in the wild are shrimps, crabs, squid. mainly inverts. but it would depend on the eel on weather or not they will eat inverts. If you keep them well fed, many will not.
a bannana eel will get bigger, i am not sure how much bigger though.... but they are more likely to eat fish and more likely to eat your inverts as well.
what other types of fish are you planning on having in this 125 and how many?

I am planning on
1-Dwarf Lionfish
1-clark clownfish
1-yellow tang
1-LM blenny
1-Exquisite Wrasse or Ruby Head Wrasse
1-starfish
1-horseshoe crab
a few nass snails
Thats it, i think. I really like the eels....I would be better off with a snowflake? I dont want something thats gonna get large, I want something that will basically stay small.
Thanks

just warning you, horseshoe crabs get very very large and will become destructive to your live rock. They will knock if over

I bought my first eel ever yesterday, it is a snowflake and it will already eat from my hand. It is about 3-4 inches long and shares the tank with
1-yellow tang
1-blue regal
1-lm blenny
3-bl hermit crabs
2-damsels
1-diamond goby
so far he hasn't made any hostile moves towards the other fish, but he is only 1 day old. I have been feeding him mysin shrimp and he loves it. The trick to the hand part is to gather as many as you can then make a fist in the water so they don't fly everywhere then open very slowly. So far he hasn't bit me but I know it's coming.

wow!! ive never seen one that small!! sweet!!! and since you are getting him small, he is less likely to eat your damsel as he gets older :happyfish

I know thats why I had to buy him. I'll post some pics of him later in the week. He is quickly moving into first place as my favorite fish-eel-whatever. Oh yeah he only cost me $15. :joy:

well sfe only get to be aprox 15 inches 20 max if im remembering correctly.very dosile eels.I hardly ever sen mine out unless he was hungry.if hes alone in a 20 he will be ok for some time but i wouldnt plan a life time for him in it.if he has plenty of rocks to hide in he will be very happy.and a tight lid as others do suggest they will find any opeing to escape your tank.I once found mine inside my aquaclear.but they do go very well with other fish now the banana eel will eat what ever will fit into his mouth a much larger more agressive eel.yopu must stick feed your eels they wont normally eat free floating foods dont hand feed ya could lose a finger lol
