they get about 10 in or so are very hardy and can be successfully kept in a community tank

Lol man SFE's get 2' long or more. They can be kept in a community tank generally, but as they are nearly blind they will try anything once and if its a slow moving or small fish he could end up lunch(depending on the SFE size)

I personally wouldn't keep them in anything smaller than a 100 gallon. Snowflakes get around 24" and can get thick. I have two of them in a 240 gallon that are around 18" or so and when they come out to swim they move quick. Also make sure your rocks are stable because they will burrow and make tunnels and knock over stuff. Make sure you have a secure fitting top with no holes because they will find them and probally go carpet surfing. As for eating fish, one of mine attacked a Picasso trigger that was about 3". The trigger was in a cave and i saw the eel sneak up on it and grab it, it let it go but it didn't survive.

I fully agree with this . Mine grew FAST When I got it was about 6-7" and as thick as a pencil . With in months it was over a foot and as thick as a magic marker .

I got "Frosty" my SFE back in June. He was around 12" then. He has grown to about 18" and 3 inches in diameter. They are very blind. Frosty has darted at my foxface a couple times. Probably, because he is the easiest thing to see.
Also, while they are moving your rocks they will also kick up a lot of sand. I keep him in a 60 gallon with three fish and a lot of rock work. Eels are not free swimmers, they would rather be in a hole IMO.

True enough . The only time I saw mine out of the rocks was at feeding time when you would see him go from rock pile to rock pile to find the food .

Ok, maybe not a full 3 inches
Between 2 and 3". I do hope he is reaching his full size though. Much bigger, and I think I will need to move him.
(sorry, don't want to hijack the thread)
