And I am just curious if there is any way to truly prevent diatoms on the start up of the tank cycle. I know Diatoms aren't a problem, but my in-laws are coming over in a few days and, as stupid as this sounds I don't want the tank to look bad.
Will just using RO/DI water eliminate the diatoms?
or are they inevitable?

So do you think using tap will make the diatoms worse? or no difference.
I have an ro unit but, just kinda curious about the tap.

eh, don't use tap. You don't know what kind of heavy metals are in your tap water unless you test. You could be putting in copper, arsnic and such.
Just use RO water. My 240 had diatoms, but it only lasted 2 days. I turned the lights off for one day and I've never seen em' again.
