So, only 3 people on this whole board ever moved their tank(s)?

I asked a few days ago if anyone had any advice on moving a fish tank and I only got answers from 3 different people (who i would like to thank very much) - I know there are more out there, and I would really like to hear from the sharks too if possible (ANYONE WHO HAS HAD TANKS FOR A LONG TIME) ... please

need some more info =what kind of filter do you have ?how long to transport?

You should try searching this board for past posts. I have seen many helpful posts about how to properly move fish...many have worked up to seven hours away with no deaths. I forget which post that was though, sorry. Anyways...try searching. That's what I always do before I have a question. Hope this helps! And believe me, no need to get frustrated. What you're asking really doesn't apply to everyone, so they might not put their two cents in. I've never moved fish myself, so I don't really have much to say. It's just the powers of chance...the right people on, at the right time. By the way, welcome to the board! I hope you find this site as interesting and helpful as I did when I first started here!

LionGirl, I saw some articles online. Go to about.com then to Hobbies, then Saltwater Aquariums, then Fish/Invertebrate Care (left side), then finally to Acclimating & Moving Livestock. I did not read the articles, as I hope to never move again, but they should give you ideas.

Yeah i have moved my tank. Moved it from East Side of Cincinnati to down town Cincinnati.
Here is how I did it.
First I got several 3.5gal buckets from local store with lids.
I then put water in to the buckets and put LR in each bucket.
Then I had one bucket for just fish.
I threw out my CC because I was going to move to LS.
I have a tide pool and I took the bioweel from that and put it in with the fish.
I have a fulval and just left the water in it.
All my other Inverts were in another bucket
It took 3 days to move all my stuff to the new apt but I did not loose any fish. They lived in the bucket for 3 days with no light or air. They did have the bioweel to help keep the amonia down.
Now I used my lights to light up my invert bucket while I set up my tank and rock and sand. I did end up loosing one invert

I think the fish tank should either be the Last thing to move or the first. I just moved my 46 gallon tank this past weeked, it was such a hassel. What i did was, bought six 5 gallon buckets w/lids to put most of my water into (if you can find bigger buckets than better). I put my live rock into some of the bucketes. I got some bags from my pet store and put a fish into each bag. Transfered the fish to my friends' tank, you could probably check with you local pet store to see if they could momentarly hold the fish for you. I had CC so i got rid of it and put live sand in once the move was complete; but if you have live sand i would only leave a thin layer of water over the live sand and carefully transfer your tank. Once i had the new tank setup back up with the water back in i let the filters, powerheads,etc. run for about a day until everthing in the water settled, and then put everything back in . Me and my fish are once again one big happy family again!!!

Thanks for replying, I havent decided if its worth moving yet or not ....... isn't it sad that I am basing moving on whether or not I think its safe for my fish? I kn ow, I am a wierdo ...

Frankly after moving 6 tanks 3 years ago when we bought our current home I wondered if it was worth it. Now I had a edge as the house was only a mile away so I decided to go for it. I took time off work and did it over the course of a couple weeks, but it was a backbreaker. If it was local then I'd go for it if long distance I would just start over. I am at the point now where I envy people with one or two tanks as I now am up to 10.
