I have to do everything the hard way...
My first venture into reef keeping was a half dead brain..(the coral...not mine :D )
I didn't know any better, I didn't know it was "sickly" in fact it was the first coral I ever "saw" at a LFS...and it was cheap!!!
Only $15 compared th $35 for a rock with some mushrooms on it...
I thought I was getting a deal !!!
I also picked up a Cabbage Leather and a Finger Leather that day...
I didn't want my Brain to be alone...
I brought them home and put them in my 10 gallon QT/grow out tank (for fish) under a 20 watt NO Grow light...
Notice the crushed Coral base...
And THEN I started surfing the web for info on corals...

Mine was Xenia. It did well for aboout thee years and spread all around until the heads started unxplainably crashing. I still have some, but they are a shadow of their former glory. :nope:

My first coral was a gonipora. To quote my LFS "It's a good low light beginner coral that will do fine in your 29 with it's 30w of NO flourescents." Did FOWLR for a while after that.

Ha thats funny, my first LFS said the same exact thing. About a week after he sold me a 29g w/2 X 15w NO's. And since I added the bacteria pouch, I wouldn't get a cycle. A small price to pay for a little experience.

A 4 pack of gargonians. 3 are photosynthetic and the 4th is a yellow finger that didn't last too long.
The other 3 I still have after 4 years.
