As you already know softened water is softened by removing ions through an ion exchange system. Great for pipes and requires less soap to clean things.
I do not recommend softened water or home processed water for aquariums fresh and salt but especially salt. The trace elements and buffering in tap water is extremely beneficial to salt tanks and the "bad" stuff is easily filtered out by the saltwater tanks system.
You do a very quick check by testing the ph of newly mixed saltwater before and after your water softener. I think you will find the ph is much lower with the processed water.
There actually is one case for softened water. It will make it easier to induce spawning in some freshwater fish. But that lowering of ph to simulate spring does not apply to saltwater tanks as far as I know.

Yes,I have a RO system already in line for my tank. That is what I have been using for make-up/repl;acement water. The softener has been placed in line with the house feed.
