I agree that most nitrate lowering additives don't work. However you can lower the nitrates without water changes. Using a DeNitrifier like the one from Midwest Aquatic Research does work but there is another I can't think of the name. I bought one for about $120, really well built with pump included. It uses sulfur and calcium media and feeds into the tank drop by drop. Over a week and the nitrates are gone. You still should perform regular water changes in order to replenish elements lost in protein skimming.
