I wanna know what it is too. Could it be a basket star??????
im not sure, but im also trying to figure out where it would have coem from, i haven't added anything new in months. the wierd thing is that its in a spot that my octo normally occupies during the day. the only reason i saw him was my octo just happened to move because i accidently scared him when i added his feeder shrimp today.

It's a basket star. There are a few varieties but this one is exactly like the one I found in some pics that I looked up. I'd definitely put my money on basket star. As to how safe they are...let me do some more research.
Update: These particular starfish are primarily nocturnal, eat microorganisms and are reef/invertibrate safe. There's more information on swf if you'd like to read it. hth

well that sucks. its in a 12g now so i seriously doubt itll it will live. is it worth moving the whole rock to the 55.. its the octo's favorite spot.

+1 to the cucumber.I had one for about 6 months and sold it back to the lfs after i doubled it in size
Anyways if you have any type of filter feeder foods aka dt's phytoplankton try and adding some to the system in moderation.Like i said mine lived off this for 6 months and doubled in size. You shoudl be ok as long as you feed dt's about twice a week

It is a filter feeding sea cucumber, not a basket star (which is a good thing since basket stars need a lot of care). there is no real need to remove it, though it will need some particulate food.
The feeding is characteristic, it takes the "branches" shoves them in its mouth and kinda sucks the food off. It it is in the rock you will have a hard time getting to it. Hopefully it will move at some point.
