Something other than hermits

I was wondering instead of losing all my snails to reef hermit crabs what else can I use? I mean can I use differen star fish or emerald crabs. My rocks are suffering lack of snails and I have empty shells everywhere.

what kinds of hermits do you have scarlets are modern citizens and wont kill unless you are starving them, emerald crabs are good,

I have 5 emerald 30 or so blue, red and zebra reef crabs 3 scarlett in 150 gal.

Correct me if I'm wrong but your crew sounds light for that size tank. Not sure of ideal numbers. but I've got close to 100 snails and crabs in my 92

who said you have to have hermits? I don't have any and never will again. Their pretty much useless if you ask me.

Ive benn reading here and seems to be only the blue legs and zebras are the problem crabs

i just added nassarius snails and i love them. I think if you add a diverse snail polulation, and dont overpopulate to the point that they will starve, you will have an effective clean up crew without worrying about the crabs. (dirty thought just popped in my head):D

yeah Nassarius snails rock!
but make sure you get Nassarius Vibex
and not Nassarius Obsoleta
they are different obsoltea snails are colder water cnails, and dont do that great in out tank, they tend to work slower, and not as much as Vibrex
Vibrex nassarius snails are small grey with a shell that looks like it has "braids"
Obsoleta snails are large, brown with a smooth shell.

i have shipmemnt coming from SWF.com 50 hermits 25 snails, 5 emerald crabs, 10 pepe shrimps
i PERSOANLY love hermits, when i go on vacation in maxico, i take alage and stick it in a tide pool filled with snails, hermits, shrimp, fish, the only thing that go straight to the alage are the crabs, thousands of hermits devour the alage in mintures, and i mean a lage peice of seaweed! that made me a beliver, i love hermits, i love how they walk, eat, live, and act.....

yea that I understand but I watch the blue kill my snails and the zebra ones killed the little red crabs. How do I balance this?

Thank You for your replys I think i'm gooing to trade in all the blue and zebra crabs for snails
