I dont know specifics about either model that you are referring to, however i do know that canon is a VERY reputable camera mfg. that has been in the business for a ver long time. The quality that comes from their products is almost unmatched. The glass work that goes into their lenses is phenominal, far better than sony. IMO, go with a canon. Olympus makes some pretty good cameras as well.

I just got a 717 this week.................I'm quite impressed, it has the capabilities of a point and shoot, and as you get better, you can manualy adjust everything............here are some pics I took with mine after only playing with it for about an hour.

canon's optic is far superior to any other on the market besides the true ziess lens that goes on rf and mf such as leica's, contax, etc. as a photographer, i would recommend the canon g3 over the sony any day. not only does it beat the sony in optic, but metering as well. many amateurs on today's market look for a camera with the "most" feature and the "widest" range of zoom, but they never use all the feature, and what they do not know is...the wider the range of zoom, the poorer your picture quality will be. than is why a lot of pro photographers use fixed lens. anyways, just my $0.02.

I like canons, i thing that they are great, but there is a major porblem with the G3 that cant be fixed. you can see the lens in the lower right quadrant of the viewfinder. Do a search and you will see what i mean. It doesnt show up in pictures, but it is still annoying nevertheless. I took mine back because of it.

i have the sony 717; it has trouble focusing on some small fish when you would like to zoom in...unless they make some sort of macro adapter??? i dont have any experience with the canon I think the 717 is better for regualr photos - actually its great!

Been investigating the Cannon G3. Non US distributers sell for as low as $499 or you can go to Wal Mart and get it for just under $800.
Anybody finding any better deals for this camera?

there are macro kits for both cameras on the market. as for parts of the picture in the viewfinder not showing...it's kind of like the same concept of shooting an RF.

From my reaserch, the Canon Powershot G3 seems like an exelent camera.
The Sony Cyber Shot F717 also seems like an exelent buy. The zoom is great, and with the proper knowledge, you can easily focus in at small fish. I am using the F707, and completely enjoy it. The F707 resembles the 717, except with a slightly weaker zoom level, as well as Macro Mode.
If money isn't all an issue, I would go with the Sony F717.
