So, I am looking at the pieces for the DIY Retrofit T5 lights. Once built-what houses the lights? are they out in the open? Mount it to a piece of wood? Gut out my current retrofit light set up and insert the new ones?

All of the above...retrofit means it is only the basics without housing...you get to decide the housing.

oooooooo. Thanks! I will try to figure out how to take out the old freshwater housing. Hmmm. then again. They have plastic components in it. I wonder if the T5 would be too hot for it. Oh. I totally misunderstood what retrofit meant. I thought it meant to style. Silly me. I want to keep my own hood just want to take out the poor 1 CF fixture and put in T5 HO in the same amount of space.

If you are not good with electric, send it back. It could become a fire hazard if you don't know what you are doing. I got retrofit 2x175w 14K MH lighting and mounted it in my canopy, but I didn't mess with trying to rewire it.
