I don't like them. I think it is adverse to your livestock as it is not as natural an environment as you can get with an aquarium. Also, it keeps you from keeping a number of critters that you would be able to with sand.
There are some serious benefits if you don't like to clean or worry about decaying matter in the tank though. There is nothing to clean up and nothing gets buried in the sand and causes ammonia.
Others will chime in shortly and give their opinion. Some people really like bare bottom tanks.

I thought about doing a future bare bottom. i saw a guy paint the bottom of his tank white too look like sand so it wasnt so drab looking. Looked nice actually.

I don't know about function but personally I think they're ugly.

i looked around at a few site and a lot of pic's of them when the bottoms all covered up in coraline its pretty neat looking. i think ill give it a go

I started my newer 75g bare bottom and it was horrible, your rocks get unstable (slide easily) and it doesn't really look that great, I now have sand in there.

Something else to think about... if a rock falls on a bare bottom tank, it's easier to crack the glass and cause a nice flood. The sand absorbs some of the impact.
