Home Depot
Just got mine yesterday.
100lbs for under 10 dollars.
Probably the cheapest thing in this hobby.
If you really need i can get it for you and send it to you.
I'm in NJ.
If there are no other alternatives.
Let me know how you make out.
Jay.

If my parents had more room in the car I would have them bring extra bags down here to florida this summer when they come to visit. I am getting 3 or 4 bags when they come down.

Somebody please describe southdown sand: color, grain size, chemical characteristics (are they silica, calcium-based or what)? Thanks.

I don't know if I would say that quikrete works the came as southdown. I have just come off a very bad experience. It could have been on eof 2 things... My salt or quikrete. Since I have used the same salt in all of my tanks I am leaning more towards the sand part of it. It clouded up really bad and left white film on everything. I waited a day got alittle better waited another day and finally just ripped everything out of the tank and will start scrubbing soon. I tasted the white residue... Didn't taste like salt build up....

I am pretty sure that quikete has silicia (sp) I would'nt use that stuff...they sell it here...but I can't find southdown <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" />

I'm not sure I can find it around here but if I could what are you lucky ones who have found it using to livening things up? Also from what I hear it's quite fine. Is it hard to clean?

How pointless is it for me to try to get some in Houston? I am using a silica based (play)sand in my sump(which works great), but am considering a change to sand in the display.
I know the distributor is based in Houston - has anyone been able to buy a truck load from them?
Anyone have that website?

My understanding is that they have stopped producing it. I thought I had read where the company was bought out and the decision was made to stop producing Southdown, this was back in January.
For me it's become almost a phantom. I heard rumor there was some in Rochester, MN so I called and confirmed. Drove over the next morning and was told the night guy decided to ship it out to Minneapolis. Made him check the computer and got the address. Drove to Minneapolis store and they split the order and some "fish freaks" bought their half of the order already. Same thing at the other store.
It's been frustrating. Anyone know for sure if they are still producing it? If you're in Houston and know of the parent company, you might want to make a call...
