Southdown

Hey All,
Well I had a 55gal reef around four years ago but my son was born and I did not have the time or money so I sold it. My boy is now four and I am making more $$ and I am going to set up a 125 reef. I just so happen to keep 5 50lbs unopened bags of southdown in the garage.
Four years ago SD was the craze but I dont hear much about it anymore. Is still ok to use SD or has there been a change in the past few years. Thanks

Welcome back :)
What you have are bags of gold. Southdown doesn't produce that aragonite playsand anymore. Nothing bad were found in SD to date.

Southdown was one of the cheapest sands when deep sand beds were more popular. If you are going with a dsb, then go ahead and use it.

yeah they figured out they could sell the aragonite to marine product companies for more than they could sell it for as playsand, so they switched to silica based playsand.

will work great the reason it was popular with deep sand bed users was u needed to use a ton of sand and it was cheap works perfect for a fuge or shallow bed in ur display tank
