Whatever. I would NOT do this, EVER, and I would never recommend someone else doing this, even if you had the prettiest tank in the world. It's just irresponsible to but animals through that. I don't even like purchasing wild fish.
I have a separate tank aside from my 75 DT and 24 Qt nano which I filled entirely with natural seawater and sand that I collected myself during the day. I caught a small angler fish and a couple of seargent major damsels, collected some live rock and put it all in the tank when I go home. I did it as an experiment also. Turns out they are doing just fine and I actually started using it as a frag tank. I only filled it with natural seawater I collected from the "toxic waste filled ocean" and the frags and fish in there are thriving. I add RO to top off the evap and have never even done a water change in 8 months. My two other tanks use water from my LFS, but they get that delivered to them also. Guess from where? THE OCEAN! Know it alls are a dime a dozen on these forums.

I agree with the last few comments. Everyone has the right to their way of doing things. Ive been working with animals for 15 years and there are alot more grey areas than there are black and white. I believe the OP knew her risks, she wasnt putting any fish or inverts directly in harms way. A few people really seemed to come down on her pretty hard. It always saddens me to see this kind of behavior in this hobby. "If you dont do it my way its the wrong way" kind of attitude really "muddies the water" and gives the false impression that some people in the hobby are very snobby. Sometimes the best thing we can do is agree to disagree and move on. Taking such a strong stance on something, that really wont have an effect on anything in the long run wont do anything but drive people away from a hobby they should enjoy. And Is it ever really possible to say without a shadow of a doubt that nothing in your tank ever came from the ocean? just sayin? peace guys...remember were all in this together...because we love it. Lets support each other.

Thank you all three of you :) I will keep everyone posted on this tank (perhaps in a new fresh thread) complete with pictures.

Please do post some pics, this thread reminds me of when I posted about using well water months ago. Despite the doom and gloom, everything is thriving and the predicted algae build-up never happened.

so glad to hear your experiment went well with your well water, we live in an area where many people are on wells and i never thought about what possible problems could arise, our city water here is soo full of chlorine you can smell it when you fill the tubs!!

I think that opinions are mostly like butt holes, everyone has one and some definitely stink worse than others. I know people say they "know" a lot of things but until research, personal experience or scientific data are gained then it is nothing more than an "opinion" not fact. See first sentence if there are any other questions.
