Spider ID - - What type of spider is this??

Okay,
I just found a very pretty spider outside. I live in Maine, if that helps any. It is a 1 inch and a half long. It has very pretty leggs. The colors of the legs are brown and off white colored. The pattern on the legs are like a candy cane, one color, then the next. It has a light brown head, with a darker brown or black down the sides of it’s head. It’s butt (lover body) is dark brown, with white, some spots are speckeld like. It’s under side is dark brown with white scattered spots. It has a kinda zig zaggy pattern down the middle of it’s lower body.
I am almost positive this spider is a European garden spider. I googled it, this is what I came up with: http://ms101.mysearch.com/search/red...eg%3D%3D&ct=AR. I am almost positive. But I want everyone's opinion.
I have a cage setup for the spider. I have bed-a-beast on the bottom of the cage, kinda thick sticks going every way, a few rocks. The container I have him in is 16 inches long, by 9 inches deep and 9 inches tall. It has a latching top. My dad drilled small holes into the side and the top of the container. Is this the correct setup for this kind of spider?
I have a few important questions that need to be answered:
1. When do these spiders start making their webs? He (the spider) is just laying on a stick. When do they make 'em, at night?
2. All I have for food items is medium mealworms. Will these be okay to drop in his web when he makes one? Or should I chop the meal worms into smaller peices?
3. Am I missing anything in his setup/
The spider is about 1 inch and a half long, so he may be a male.

Any help with help. :)
Thank you,
Emma.

I would tend to think its an orb species of spider, very common for this area. They can get very large too.. well relatively speaking.
I dont know too much about them other than the fact that they like to make their webs close to out door lighting I see them most active at night, and dormant during the day. And mid to late fall they are gone.

Okay, thanks for trying. So, I think that he will start making his web later on tonight. I hope so. I hold him with gloves on, but I am just to chicken to hold him with my bare hands. It's just the feeling of those little spider legs. Makes my skin crawl.

Is it just me, or am I on the wrong forum/site?

Best regards,
Emma.

I can't send PM yet, my account is to young.
Well,
Never mind. I introducted a female to my small male. Then all of a sudden the female started to bite on the male. Then the next thing you know, I see a leg there and a chunck of skin here. So I let the female go, she was really mean, ever to me. I think she was old, she was only the color grey, but had the same color legs of the male...
Maybe I will find another tomorrow.

I was so confused by this post.. then I saw the logic.. and now I'm a little freaked out because I think I have one of those spiders posted earlier right outside the window near my desk.
But we arent really sure what it is.
