Can any one tell me what this is?

I went to sleep at night with the tank looking fine and when i got up and looked at the tank i saw this weird looking spider web thingy on the corals.
any one here have an idea of what this is or how it got there?
I cleaned it out with one of those pincher/grabby thingies and it was like guck when i pulled it out.
No dead things... all fish and inverts accounted for.
Parameters are all fine.

Most likely from a vermetid worm/snail.
Mostly harmless but an extreme annoyance. Will breed and spread in abundance, spreading webs and tubes all over your tank. Once you get them there is no way to get rid of them.
I have them in my tank and the only way to control them is to manually bust the tubes, which is time consuming and sometimes painful.
I have noticed that my sps and lps with tubes around them look withdrawn and shriveled. Keep these tubes busted constantly and the lps/sps should eventually sting the worm and keep it withdrawn until it starves.

may be an agitated coral and that plate sitting on that piece of branch rock may be the culprit if it is going to be on rock it should be flat and smooth but would fair better on the bottom

Didn't even think about that. As was said, the plate coral should be on the sandbed. It could be getting stung by the other coral, so it is releasing toxin (the web) that will more than likely kill the other coral.
The plate coral is capable of moving around, so leaving it perched on the rocks is a bad idea as it can injure itself by falling off or fall onto another coral, stinging it.

i searched online for pics of the vermetid snail. I dont see anything in the tank resembling anything from the pics. and it was more like slime/guck than webby.
It could be like chilwil84 said. aggravated coral. but it has been there for a while and has been shaking around his tentacles and not been withdrawn.
It hasn't happened again yet, but will keep a watch on it.
