Spitting Niger

my way

Active Member
When I open the hood of my tank to feed my fish, unless I imedialtely drop the food into the tank my Niger Trigger will spit water out of the tank and it is quite a bit of water considering his small size.Does anyone know why it does that? I assume it is for attention ,but I would'nt think that in the wild they are much of a surface swimmer and I tend to think that their wild tendencies would carry on to tank life to some degree It reminds me of an Archer fish which does this to knock prey off of branches that hang over the water. If he does this as an adult, I'm going to get quite a shower. Any ideas of why he does this other than for attention? Do any of yours do the same?

My parrotfish did that, and I thought it was hilarious. She definitely wanted attention and food, the quicker the better. Congrats on having a fish with personality!

The spitting that triggers do is mainly used to spit into rock's to loosen food items that might be gripping on to the rock work. this behavior that is show during feeding . It can also be a show of dominance . Like a cat hissing or its fur standing up. it just a way of saying hey watch it your a little to close to my home and I'm not comfortable.

My puffer seems to do that when he is biting at my hand (with food in it) and only coming up with water/air.

Our Pinktail trigger spits at me if he doesn't IMMEDIATELY get a piece of food while I am hand feeding.
He is such a fat pig

It startled me when he did it the first time. He still does it every time I feed. Toooo funny
