Anyone have or know anything about sponge crabs? I really want to get one of these guys they look awesome!
The Sponge Crab (Dromidiopsis australiensis) is a member of the sponge crab family Dromiidae. They are referred to as sponge crabs due to the habit of most species carrying a living sponge on the carapace (they may also carry sea squirts/ascidians). The last two legs of the crab are clawed and are smaller than the preceding pairs and are used to grip the sponge. The Dromiids are considered to be very primitive crabs. The body of this crab is generally colored brown or gray and they are excellent at camouflage as they hide under sponge. This species is thought to be endemic to Australia along the east and west coast and can be found from the intertidal zone to depths of 10 meters.

they like to carry sponges on their backs. if a sponge is not available to them, they will go after all kinds of things in the tank

Haha yeah I know that, I wanted to know more or less if they would make a nice addition for my 24 or if it would be cool to showcase in a pico I may build. I guess I want any more info people have that the internet descriptions don't provide.

i saw one carrying a small rock that had a large aiptasia on it at the lfs. id probably recommend it in a pico thats controlled. like all zoas, that way he doesnt go around stinging other corals

They are probably like the decorator crab. Whatever they can find, they will put on their backs. maybe it would go for an LPS and place it on its back and walk around the tank stinging other corals. Or maybe they will just find a sponge and keep it on their back. how long would they keep each animal on their back?

or is the decorator crab related to the sponge crab? i think it is.
I know all about the fact that they like to put things on their backs
, and as for them being related to decorators I don't think so. Decorators are Cyclocoeloma tuberculata, and have completely different leg positioning and shell shape. Decorators are way more hairy too. Though they definitely are a variation of crabs who camouflage themselves.
