Sponge Death

totally depends on the type of sponge, (there are over 5000 different types)
some turn clear, some turn white, some disentegrate, some the fleshy part deteriorates leaving a "skeleton" of sorts. do you know the species or common name for your sponge? then maybe I could be more specific.

I believe it is an orange ball sponge.
I had no reason to believe it was dead, but it does have slimy strings extending from it today. I noticed it after the water change, so all the sand and muck I stirred up got caught in the slime that was previously invisible.. that's my theory anyway.
Also, it should be noted that the LFS I bought it from took it out of the water and put it into the bag for transport. It's been a month however..

While I am no expert on them by any means, if they lifted it out of the water then chances are pretty good it died. Once air is trapped in a sponge it has a hard time getting rid of it; and the areas around the air pocket will die off. If they lifted the whole thing out of water; likely a large chunk of it was effected from that.

I had a piece of live rock that had 2 sponges on it, one red, and one orange. Air only touched the rock for a few seconds but the red sponge died, the orange sponge is still going strong though, I guess it really depends on the sponge. The red one just started disentigrating until it was no more.
