Sponge in the sump????

thanks, does the sponge help anythings by putting it in the sump?? I bought a used tank awhile back, and the guy had a sponge in the sump, should I put it back in??

I have sponges between the compartments of my sump, basically to slow flow between them. Others may have suggestions as to any other benefit they may offer.

sponges can trap detritus, this is a good thing if you clean them regularly to remove the gunk and a bad thing if you dont.

Sponges in the sump are used when you need to set up a QT tank if you don't have one already running. You place the sponge into the qt filled with tank water, it is an instant cycle. Keep the sponge in there. It harbors no nitrates, just bacteria. Make sure there is water flow poiting toward it.
