Sponge

When I do water changes, about 2" of my orange tree sponge is above the water. Is this going to kill it, or will is be ok as long as the bottom has never seen air? Or is the entire sponge not supposed to get air?

my understanding is that NO part of the sponge can hit air or it can kill it. any part of the sponge can take air into might look into fragginf a part of it to keep it below the water or do smaller water changes more often to keep from draining so much water out of the tank.
