tanks to small for a ray, if you left the entire tank bare then you could get away with it for alittle while, and I wouldn't start out wtih a spotted ray, which I'm guessing you mean a blue spotted ribbon tale ray which are very hard to keep alive, if you want a ray get a yellow or california ray they are the most hardy and you can find them relatively small, but personally get a larger tank if you want a ray. best of luck with your choice, make sure you have quality filtration too,

do the california or yellow rays stay small or do all rays get too big for a 125? if i had a bigger tank like a 240 could i keep other fish with the ray?

yes if you bought a 240 you could keep other fish wtih the ray, basically you want at least 2 feet of width and plenty of open swimming area for the ray, the ray won't both many fish you just have to worry about the fish that like to eat cartilage and will pick on the ray. Also a baby yellow or california ray are small enough to stay in a 125 for sometime but will def. need a larger tank. hope this was some help for you
