Squidd I need your help

Hi Squidd - TurningTim has been helping me, but his computer is on the fritz so I need you now - if you don't mind.

Tim drew plans for me (based on your idea) and I built my sump - pictures attached. So is that right? Place for skimmer on one side, refugium on other side, and return in the middle.
Next thing to tackle I guess is I need to know what kind of pump I need to get the water back up in my system. Tim suggests using my overflow to go into my sump (one drop on skimmer side and one drop on refug side) and then return the water over the top of tank.
MT size is 100 gallons: 60Lx20Hx18W
sump/refug is 45 gallons: 36L x 12.5W x 24H

Basicly looks good from here...I like the return in center...I would probably do the "third" baffle (closest to return pump lower (1/2) height...

Need to know rating on overflow and then "match" pump to it... taking into concideration losses from head height, line size, and elbow restriction...

How do I determine that? As far as changing the 3rd baffel - I have already siliconed it, how do I change it now?

Cut it out, cut it down, silicone back in...
How do I determine that?
What size is you current overflow..?

the over flow box is 8" w x 19" h
Looks like the holes in the tank are 3/4" and 1". Hope that answers your question. Pleasee forgive I am ignorant about this stuff. Complete newbie to drilled tanks and overflows.

**EDIT** Just to confirm you say this baffel (in red) should be cut down. It measures 13" high. You think it should be cut down to 6.5" right?

Hey milo and squidd, I'm back at least until this stupid thing blows up again......
Squidd I was basing this on a 900 gph rate 1"+3/4" drain and 1" duel OTT returns. Calc'd baskwash at 2" from MT and placing durso standpipes to the top of the OF (minimize drain Backwash).
Milo, DO cut down that last baffle. I believe that your stand is 30" and tank at 21"? so you're looking at 50+ vert head? And 50" hort head does that sound right squidd?
Man it stinks not have my CAD program........

OK, With 8- 90 elbows and 2- 45 elbows 1 union 1 ball valve 5' vert head 4' hort head.
I'm getting 750 gph with a mag 12 and 850 with a mag 18. Now with that being said I just set up a 120 and used a 18 and its too much, had to throddle it back quite a bit and the 120 is a tall so vert head is greater.
Let me see if I can get pics up on the 120.....
What do you think squidd?

Tim - measurement from the bottom of my stand (inside where tank will sit) to the top edge of my MT is 53 1/2"

I think a mag 12 will work fine but we'll see if squidd has anything to say.......

What abou a Mag 18 or will that be to much? Maybe I could just use the return pump and not have a closed loop or should I still have a closed loop set up??

I think its b/c the baffle height is so tall that you may get micro bubbles from the water fall. My fault, bad designer

The size of the pump is directly related to the size of the drain. just b/c you pump more through the system doesn't mean that you can drain it all. Reguardless of the pump you can only drain 900gph, so there is no reason to have a larger pump then needed. You will only get 9x flow out of the sump. If you want or need more you will have to suppliment with CL or heads.
Or hubby could always make the 3/4" a 1" drain by expanding the hole in the tank..... :thinking:

I told him probably because the skimmer will be pushing water and the refugium will just slowly flow over. Is that right???

Yes..
Partly the waterfall (first "drop" should be between baffles not just before pump) and partly the "deflection" of any bubbles from over the first and over the second...deflected "up" by third...and partly for the aditional evap volume in the return chamber provided above the last baffle thru to the first baffle...
But "mostly"...cause I said so...

That is the determining factor...
1" duel OTT
Split where...? "T" at top or dual up pipes...??
Either way the Mag 12 is all you'll need...I'd go 1" up and over and in and then "T" inside tank for split...

I was thinking split w/T at the sump and then up the back with spa-flex and to the corners OTT.....
But you're usually right b/c you say so! LOL
