Star Fish Loosing it's Legs (No Predators)

I observed today my brittle star fish has lost 3 of it's five legs. I actually saw one of the legs squirming around I'm guessing it's not going to turn into another star fish.
Why are the legs comming off it appears none of the legs were torn by fish.
Will they grow back. (the star fish is actually moving around now with two legs)

The only think I can think of is that I can't find my purple Nudibranch.
but all my shrimps are still alive

Generally when a starfish loses limbs (aside of something taking them off) they are dying. Watch for holes in the body. When you see that, it's a good bet he will not be around much longer.
I once had a star that lost all it's legs except one.. About a week later I noticed holes developing in the body portion and soon after he was gone.

well the star fish did die
but the legs still move will they grow into something or is that it?
