star general and blue hippo tang and 5 snails in 55 gallons is this safe?

You could not keep a blue hippo tang long term in a 55 gallon tank.

What do you have for filtration now? liverock,skimmer,etc....

alittle more information on the tank would be a great help.
something else is that the blue tang really needs more swimming room than a 55 gallon would give the fish. I would strongly caution you against adding a blue tang.

honestly I recomend taking him back to the LFS or get a larger tank in the very near future to keep them happy and healthy.
also I missed the star in there how old is this tank and do you have any live rock in there.
