star/pod

got some corals tonight, luckily i did a FW dip...
i THINK this may be a pod. first thought was a snail, or a limpet, but the body is segmented and curls up when touched. it seems to be smooth under the shell though, no sign of legs.
second is a starfish. it's not an asterina, but is only about the size of a dime and has orange spots on the top.

Why do you think the first star is not an asterina?
Are you sure the second is not a chiton? Can you get a macro shot of it? Check for 8 overlapping plates on that one.

yes, there are 8 overlapping plates, no macro shot though.
i don't think it's an asterina cause the legs are formed completely, and only 5 of them. plus it's got eyes that none of my other asterinas have. if you think it's an asterina then ok...it just doesn't look like any of the thousands i have in the tank and have seen pics of.

The second pic is a chiton.
Asterina is a highly variable genus with loads of species, virtually impossible to distinguish, even for seastar experts. So while it is possible i is not Asterina, but a close relative, it would be very difficult to get any closer. So coloration, number of arms, etc can all vary greatly. I would say in function it will be very much the same, one hopes, as the others you have

so the say 40 off one coral dead in a FW dip wasn't that good of a thing then (on the chitons, i couldn't care less on the asterina hehe, i've got too many of them)

Well, uh, assuming I got the id right. So far as I know, they are grazers.
The inside surface should kinda look like the foot of a snail or limpet...

now, you mentioned isopods in the PM.. any ideas reno?
im trying to get some of those snails to figure out if they are sundial snails
btw, i looked at my tank after the lights went out and i have more chitons than i can count.

isopods were chitons. when we meet again, i'd love some more if you can spare them...

silver ones are fading fast, and the zoo from your pico hasn't opened, which is odd...but everything else is beautiful.
i did another FW dip on all of the zoos before putting them in and saw no eggs, so i'm not too worried about the nudis

yeah, that one polyp. i had it in my pico for about 3 days before it opened. it likes the lower light i think?
tht colony in my 90 is at the top, the polyp i gave you came from a 36 w on a 3 gallon. it was kinda shaded too. so i would throw it in the middle.
did the eclipses make it?! those have to be my favorite zoa so far.
how about the favia? anything there or is it a skelaton?
btw, aqua dreams got a ton of new zoas in. alot of green ones but if yoru lucky, you will find some green ones with yelllow centers. i got a frag for about 25 and its the brightest true green in my tank

Hi Renogaw, you said something in this statement that caught my curiousity! i know very little about starfish. so after thinking about this for a little bit i decided to ask the silly question. what do you mean about this star fish having eyes?
thanks!

some starfish have eyes around the top of their body or on their legs. usually too small to see on asterinas, but these were orange and very visable.

favia has 3 polyps left, will probably just become a frag plug.
are the eclipses the one with the orange fringe that i scraped off the rock? if so all three polyps opened.
are you going to head to their midnight madness sale tomorrow? he's giving progressively better discounts the closer to midnight that you show up.
