I have some green star polips that I bought a week ago. Today I don't think they openeded. When should I start to worry that there is a issue. I also have some zoos.
Heres the run down at last test (which was Sat morning):
12 Gallon Nano DX.
Amon:0
Nitrite:0
Nitrate:10-20
PH 8.2
Salt: 1.024
temp 82.4
I do my testing every sat followed with a 20% h2o change. I think I will test again in the am it it does not open up. Check for spikes and all.

Yup, nothing to worry about. I would start being a little concerned if it does not open for 2 or 3 days straight.

Ya know I had a feeling that it could do that for a day or two.
Thank you for the info. I will repost on Fri if all is not well.

I have a conony of green star polyps, about 10 in. across, and there are usually a few that don't open. I'd be worried after 3 days.

while we are on the subject, i had a prob with hair algae (only in the polyps). picked up an emerald crab and he tore thru it on one side. im not home much during the day, but from what i've seen, the ones by where he was cleanin arent coming out much. did he hurt them, or are they just stressed from all the action? picked up the crab on thurs, its now tues

I'm not sold on emerald crabs, allthough I have 2. I've seen they niping at some of my corals. I tried to catch them but gave up after several tries.
I heard that you can use a very soft tooth brush to clean the star polyps.
And I would imagine that they are just stressed. give them some time to recover.

Update:
Day 2 and still not open. Just a mat of nothing. Took h2o test this morning:
Amon:0
Nitrite:0
Nitrate:10
PH 8.2
Salt: 1.024
temp 83.4
The water is good. I did lessen the time that the lights were on on Mon. I wonder if this caused the effect. I realized that my timer had them comming on at 7am and off at 9pm. Too much light. I changed it to 9am - 6 pm and today changed the lights to 9-9. I like to see them at night when I'm here.
So I guess its not the water. Its eather the light change or...I dont know what. I guess we will see what tommorow brings. Any ideas.

I have had mine stay closed for nearly a week. If you don't start to notice any loosening of the mat or discoloration you will be fine.

About half the stars have opened today about 30% of the way and then close. It has done this several times. Humm. I will keep my eye on it.

The purple mat that the polyps grow from will release from the rock or whatever they are attached to. I hope that helped..

Update:
I have spent many hours of research (sitting looking at the tank) What I found was that my Sally Light Foot seemed to spend alot of time here. Picking and cleaning. So...Having herd bad stories about this crab I tore up about half of the tank and caught me a crab. I dumped him into my QT tank where he made a feast of a dyeing snail. Since then the polips have started to open more and more for longer amounts of time. I think it is getting over its stress. Time will tell.

:help: Ok Only part of the mat is attached to rock. The rest of it is going comando, aka not attached.
