lighting? what sort of lighting do you have in the system, and temps might affect it? possibly a fish bugging or messing with it?

did it ever open when you first got it?
reason I ask:
I bought a GSP rock for $70.
Took it home, acclimated it to perfect water, and it never opened.
After a month there was little but crusting purple, and goo from decay.
I was crushed!Hear I killed the most basic of basic. I mean GSP's are practicaly invincible.
Why would something die when it was painstakingly acclimated to ideal water?
The answer was in the acclimation. After an hour drive home, then another hour in the bucket getting a drip the water was simply too cold.
As a noob I treated my GSP like a fish. It was the first and last coral I acclimated that way. Now I float the bag 15-20 min. Then dump em straight in.Never looked back. Never had a death.

I got a really decent size patch of GSP with my LR purchase from a local reefer. I didnt even know what it was because it just looked like a pink mat with pimples.
A poster on here told me to put it in some flow so I did and its been open ever since, except when a crab decides to crawl over it, but its right back out shortly after.
The holding tank I had it in had 110w PC's for lights, my new tank has T5's they don't seem to care, jsut as long as it has flow

it was going so good ever since I got it, I noticed a change when the enengier goby started to move the sand around when I got him. so I moved the polyp up on a piece of rock. ever since then is when I saw a change .

my gut says light then. too much increase/decrease maybe.
how long has it been again? I would worry after about 4/5 days.
But they can take a week or two in extreme cases. Since its the original tank, the water will be no change really.
That leaves light, flow, or something new that hasn't been tested for yet.
edit:
oh wait, you said a month...
a whole month? that thing is dead. When you see pus, or mucus coming out of it then its final.

Star polyps are often very easily irritated. Being moved or touched, being pestered by a fish, or even just experiencing a change in flow and/or lighiting can cause them to close up for quite a while.
Be sure that the polyps are in good conditions (ie lighting, flow, water parameters, no more sand from the goby, etc) and then leave them be. It's not too uncommon for them to stay closed up for a week or two when they're annoyed.

. you still have life.

sounded like at first they had been closed for a month when i first read.
But if they are simply not fully extended...then give it time. I moved mine and they went from 1" to 1/4" nubs. But now they are back to about 1/2" in length. Its been two weeks, and they grow a little each day now.
They are just temperamental.

Is that a sea urchin in the pic? Maybe its poking, harming or bugging them? I think they scavenge on the bottom right and eat plant matter?

those actually look like yellow polyp colony, not star polyps, however, sometimes mine won't open due to getting blasted by PH. Adjusted flow and they seem happy, but mine have never been closed for a long period like that. Also they might just up and leave to another part of tank if they are unhappy. A few of mine have relocated around the tank. Sometimes ya just have to sit and watch for awhile to be able to really determine the problem
