i have 2 large hermit crab before but after my hyposalinity i pretty much gave them away with some of my fish..
now i have
8 " dogface puffers
5 " porcupine puffers
4 " niger trigger
3.5" clown trigger
3" humu humu trigger
4 " yellow tang
24" snowflake eel
8" volitan lion
can i put starfish or lots of giant hermit to clean up the scrap meat that the triggers and puffers leave behind.. i feed them 5 to 10 silversides and shimp a day

starfish will just be trigger/puffer food for sure.
The giant hermits may work, but sometimes they are a little too nasty, aggression wise, for my liking.

What about sea urchin? I read somewhere they can be with aggresive fish and are great scavengers.

I had two big hermits like the size of golf balls and my humu broke them up like a preztel in your had in a few short weeks. I would maybe try an urchin but triggers can blow out real hard and knock them over then eat them is what they do alot.

Urchins seem like a good choice, but be carefull...an inventive trigger will blow over an urchin or just pick it up and turn it over and decimate it. The good news is, urchin is part of a balanced breakfast.
Just keep those triggers well fed, maybe they won't bother.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read the entire post...and completely echoed something already said. Where's Toll Booth Willy when you need him...

I have an aggresive tank where anything put in the tank is taken as a food source, including my hands. I did manage to get a CC Star to survive in it for about 4 months now. I put it in after the lights went out for the night so the gang did'nt see something going in and imediately attack it. They next day I did notice a few marrks on the star that I assume where from someone trying to take a bite and did notice my Porcupine puffer keeping his eye on it. I just made sure for the next few days to keep the boys very well fed in hopes of keeping their interest away from the CC Star. Now they don't even notice it's in there. I just hope it stays that way.

I have a Dog Face Puffer that ate an urchin that was in the tank before the Puffer was introduced. It picked away at the spines until it was able to reach the urchins body. Didn't happen overnite but over several weeks.
