Im looking into getting a orange linka starfish. My water quality appears to be stable, and the tank has been established for 4.5 months. Would a starfish be okay? I have pplenty of algae, and coralline growth. Also, do they require certain calcium/alk. levels? I dont test for calicum or alkalinity. Thanks!

How much LR? Which tank?
regardless of those 2 factors, I believe 4.5 months isn't long enough. I think ophiura, our star expert, wrote an article about them, which can be found in the article section.
On another note, which LFS do you go to in charlotte?

75 lbs. LR, 75 gal.
I go to Petland in the arboretum...even though saltwater isnt their whole focus, other saltwater hobbysts run the saltwater section, and ive always had luck there! reasonable prices

thanx! Ill have to try that place sometime. I usually fo to fintastic's they have an awesome display tank, but I am not sure if I would ever buy any fish from them...even if I could afford their fish (they are WAYYYYYYYYYYY overpriced!).

No, calcium isn't somethign to worry about.
The amount of LR is something to worry about though. it is recommended that you have 100 pounds, or more before you get a linkia, or a fromia.

Unless your tank is over 100 gallons I would never attempt any stars other than the scavengers(ex.brittles) because they will eventually starve to death. Shops will and try to sell things without any knowledge about the species they sell. Linkia are cool and tempting, but I wonder thier place in home aquariums. Anyway, hopefully euphoria catches this and she can explain more.

Oooooh, I completely forgot about Linkia multiflora (google should have some pics)! These supposedly need much less rock than the other linkia's. THey still need about 75 pounds of LR.

Ophiura has stated before that orange and multiflora linckias do not need as much LR as the blues and burgandys. You will be fine with that size tank for an orange or multiflora linckia. Just remember to do a LOOOOOONG drip acclimation.

They won't accept foods, they only graze off of LR, which is why it is imperative to have enough. I acclimated my blue linckia for 5 hours and my orange for 4. They are VERY sensitive to changes in salinity and can die up to a month later if they aren't acclimated properly. Be sure to keep the water in your acclimation bucket the same as the temp in your tank. Good luck!

5 months now...the rock i bought was in antoher persons tank for 4 years. also, the starfish is on the glass, but at the tope of the water, like 1/8 of him out of the water. is that normal?

Mt stars sometimes come to the top. They bend their arms back like they are reaching for something. I think alot of stars do that. I have the orange linckia in my 55 and he is on the glass alot, my blue is in my 75 and he tends to stay mostly on the rocks.
