Starting a 110 Gallon

I recently purchased a 110 gallon (60x18x24) tank and I am looking to start up a carnivore habitat. I have read a lot about how useful sump filters are and I would like to set one up myself. A friend of mine is giving me a 30-40 gallon aquarium that I'll use as a sump but I'm not exactly sure how to set it up. I know that I'll need to buy an overflow but where?
What I am asking is how many chambers should I use and what should I put in each of them? Also any other information on sumps would be extremely helpful for me. Thank you

you can run a search and find countless threads on sumps and refugiums here but equally important in a "carnivore" tank will be good skimming so don't overlook that piece of equipment.
