Starting a 120 and need some help.

I just set up a 120 with an overflow and it's my first one. I bought a pond waterfall pump that does around 1300 gph. It is really loud in the overflow part of the tank. Is this to much? I also want to use the lower tank as a refugium but dont know where to start. Need someone to point me in the right direction.

theres 3 pages about how sumps/overflows/fuges work. should give you lots of helpful info.
